Interesting Idea...but that's all I can say for it

Product Rating:
Pros: Nice graphics, variety of furniture
Cons: Boring, lack of anything to do
The Bottom Line: Though I was disappointed with this game it's clear a lot of people enjoy it. If you enjoy games with plots, storylines, or well, something to DO, don't get this.
Personally, I just don't see WHY this game is so popular, as I have found nothing particuarly fun or addictive about it. After reading a lot of positive reviews about it I thought the game seemed something unique and interesting, but unfortunatley though the game is indeed something different, I didn't find anything fun about it and struggled to play it for more than 15 minutes. I managed to play it for about 10 minutes a day for around a month before writing this review so as to at least get a fair assessment of it.
The story behind the game is, well...there isn't really one. You live on an island surrounded by animal neighbors. And, uh, that's it. There are no real plots or stories. I suppose the main thing about this game is the other animals, which you can interact with, and after time they move out and other neighbors move in. I will admit that I find most of the animals to be cute, but that's pretty much all there is to it. The characters will repeatedly say the same things to you so there isn't much in the way of interaction. You are able to do things such as plant flowers, go fishing, and put furniture in your house. Only the latter of this I find interesting really, I'm not sure what I'm missing but I don't see much enjoyment in planting flowers everywhere. The fact that the land is customisable is something I like, but I just wish there was something MORE. Usually I'm a fan of games like this, but Animal Crossing just bored me to no end. A customisable feature I do enjoy is the ability to design your own shirts using the stylus. Other animals may purchase the clothing you have made and wear it, which always amuses me to see. The animals also keep letters and gifts you give them, and they may bring it up with other animals or display them around their houses. These are all nice little touches, but unfortunatley not really enough to make me want to replay the game.
The game uses the DS's clock, meaning it's in real time. So, if it's night time in real life, it'll be night time within the game. Certain events happen on certain days at certain time, and so on. This can be annoying if you work during the day and are unable to play the game properly without changing the clock's time. Though it's a nice touch, I've found this feature to be more annoying than useful as everything always seems to be closed or asleep by the time I'm able to play it.
The graphics on the game are something I like. They aren't realistic, but they're not supposed to be. They are however cute and bright, and much as I disliked the game I did enjoy first exploring the little land to see the graphics of the animals and the world itself.
If you enjoy games where you just get to chill out and relax, then look into this game. If you prefer games with a storyline and a mission, this game will only disappoint you.
