| ahiggs's Full Review: Fort Wilderness Campground |
I'm a life long camper and have camped in many different settings and styles ranging from strapping everything I need onto my back and walking from campsite to campsite to using the popup tent camper we purchased after our daughter's birth. I've camped in campsites where you have to get your water from an underground spring to campgrounds with water that hooks up to your camping unit. And all sorts of campgrounds in between.
And for campgrounds and facilities, Fort Wilderness is one of my favorites. First they assign your campsite by unit type. If you are camping in a tent, you will not be next to the large camping unit where the campers watch television all night. And that's an advantage.
Second, the sites are spacious and Disney uses shrubs and native greenery to create barriers between the campsites. And all campsites are shaded, an important feature if your camping unit does not have air conditioning. Very nice, especially after some of the very cramped and crowded campgrounds I have stayed at.
Third, the bathhouse was the cleanest I've ever seen in a campground. Including the ones in a small 20 site campground that I worked at when I was a teenager (and keeping the bathroom clean was my responsibility!) And the bathhouse was spacious and adequate for the number of campers it served. There is nothing worse than being in a hurry to go somewhere for the day and having to wait 30 to 45 minutes for your turn to shower.
Fourth, the campground staff emptied the trash several times a day and made sure that the campground stayed clean. And they have an easy to use recycling area, always a plus in my opinion. We were there in December 1998 and temperatures were hitting all time lows for that section of Florida. Every morning we would see many boxes and packaging materials from portable electric heaters sitting around the trash cans. And never did I see any of this blown away or in other parts of the campsites.
Fifth, the transportation system was easily accessible and convenient. While Fort Wilderness is farther out than most of the Disney resorts and caused it to take longer to go from one spot to another, it was still easier than driving to the parks. Our daughter was almost 2 years old and we had to take a stroller everywhere we went and the transportation system made it easy to carry the stroller along with us.
Sixth, it was great to be able to make purchases at the parks and at Downtown Disney and have the items sent to the campground store for pickup. I loved not having to carry around everything we purchased and worrying that it might break, get lost or be stolen. One of our goals for this trip was to finish our Christmas shopping so we made more purchases than normal for us.
The only real disadvantage we experienced at Fort Wilderness was that our campsite was fairly close to the area where they showed movies at night. And the sound carried and would gain our daughter's interest as we were trying to get her to go to sleep. But compared to many campgrounds we have been to, that was minor.
The cost of camping at Fort Wilderness is higher than we are used to paying at state and national park campgrounds, but we researched it before we went and found that it is not anymore expensive than other campgrounds in the Orlando area.
We are looking forward to another trip someday.
